If you are an active, vested or retired member (retired after 9/11/01) who participated in World Trade Center (WTC) Rescue, Recovery, or Clean-up Operations between September 11, 2001 and September 12, 2002, you should file form F622 - Notice of Participation in WTC Rescue, Recovery or Clean-Up Operations
All Tiers. This is NOT an application for disability. This is a sworn statement indicating the dates and locations of your participation which preserves your right to file for disability under the WTC Disability Law. If you meet the pre-qualifying criteria under the WTC Disability Law and wish to apply for disability retirement, you must file a disability application. Please complete all of the information on the form, have the form notarized and return it to NYCERS. The deadline for submission of this form is September 11, 2022. If you have any questions, please contact our Call Center at 347-643-3000. Eligible beneficiaries of deceased members should complete this form as the members would have completed it. Eligibility for Probation Officer Title Series and DOP Staff age 65+

As you know, all Probation Officer Title Series staff and DOP staff age 65+ (regardless of job function) who wish to be vaccinated, may schedule an appointment for a no-cost vaccination through any of the three on-line resources previously shared (vaccinefinder.nyc.gov; vaccinepod.nyc.govor am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov) and further detailed at the very end of this e-mail*, as well as at any of the five vaccination hub sites that have been set-up specifically for eligible City employees:

LaborPress - "UPOA Challenges Ongoing Discrimination Against Women of Color"

On 1/17/21, LaborPress published our story “UPOA Challenges Ongoing Discrimination Against Women of Color”. Members of the United Probation Officers Association (UPOA) filed a class-action lawsuit recently, against the City of New York and its Department of Probation for alleged discriminatory practices towards women of color. The lawsuit alleges that since the department’s demographics started to change from predominantly white men 30 years ago to mostly women of color, probation officers’ starting salary began to drop. Caseloads for officers have increased substantially, promotions to higher-paying jobs are hard to come by for women of color. Most women of color rarely reach their maximum salary despite nearly 30 years of service. Click here to read the full story

Stepping Up - Thank You PO Ross

Probation Officer Asia Ross of Queens Adult services is stepping up and is helping save lives by volunteering to work at one of the many dispensing stations set up at one of the many locations thru out NYC by the Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene where city employees like Officer Ross can assist individuals getting the Covid Vaccine. This is just another example of how members of UPOA are Making A Difference in the lives of so many . Hats off to you Officer Ross .

Covid - 19 Virtual Town Hall Event

The City of New York’s Vaccine Command Center is inviting you to join a virtual town hall event, featuring Dr. Jay Varma, Senior Public Health Advisor to the Mayor, for the latest information about the COVID-19 vaccine. This will be an excellent opportunity for New York City staff to learn more about the vaccines, vaccine safety, and how/where they are being distributed and have the opportunity to ask questions.

This event will be held on multiple occasions to accommodate varying employee schedules.  

  • Friday, January 15th at 11am

  • Tuesday, January 19th at 1pm

  • Wednesday, January 20th at 7pm

  • Thursday, January 21st at 6pm

  • Monday, January 25th at 6pm

Questions will be accepted in advance, and Dr. Varma and DOHMH staff will address as many as possible during the event. UPOA vs City of New York and NYC Department of Probation

Today, our EEO Attorneys, The Kurland Group, filed a class action lawsuit Case No. 21-cv-218
in the US District Court against the City of New York and NYC Department of Probation regarding pay inequities and disparities. In our statement, we said, “Probation Officers do heroic work every day, balancing the need to keep our neighborhoods safe with giving New Yorkers involved in the criminal justice system a second chance. We are proud of how Probation Officers have stepped up during the pandemic, taking on additional responsibilities while risking their own health and safety in service to our city. But for too long our work has been undervalued because our members are predominantly women and people of color.”

“We understand that the city has tough budget decisions to make in the years to come. But this economic downturn has had a disproportionate impact on women and people of color, and it would be immoral to persist with pay discrimination in order to balance the budget.
